Meteora is one of the most amazing places in Greece with monasteries perched on top of the enormous rock towers made Meteora a very special place.

The Metéora who was listed in the World Heritage is home to six monasteries and are all built on natural sandstone rock pillars. It is unknown when Metéora was established. It was know that more than 20 monasteries were built but only six remain today, of this six monasteries five are inhabited by males and one by females. These six are monasteries Great Meteoron, Varlaam, St. Stephen, Holy Trinity, St. Nicholas Anapausas and Rousanou. Due to the amount of peaks and paths for climbing and hiking the Metéora attracts many tourist throughout the year.

During World War II, Metéora was bombed and much art treasures were stolen. Each monastery has less than 10 inhabitants but attract numerous tourists yearly. The Metéora monasteries are one of the most popular tourist sites in the world and currently serve primarily as museums.
