The Grand Canyon National Park

The Grand Canyon National Park is one of the United States oldest national parks located in Arizona. Within the park lies the the Grand Canyon which is a steep sided gorge carved by the Colorado River in the U.S. state of Arizona over a period of more than 17 million years. The Grand Canyon is 446 km long ranges in width from 6.4 to 29 km and attains a depth of more than 1.6 km. Every year millions of people visit the Grand Canyon which is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World.

The Grand Canyon National Park is home to a wide variety of animals which has over hundreds of animals species including birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians and fishes. The Grand Canyon National Park's most celebrated inhabitants are the Albert and Kaibab squirrel. The Albert and Kaibab squirrel shared the same ancestor the tassel-eared squirrel but widely separated by the vast canyon each cousin has evolved into two separate and distinct species. The Kaibab squirrel lives only at the north rim and the Albert squirrel lives only at the south rim.

The Grand Canyon National Park also has a number of endangered plants and there are approximately more than 2,000 known species of vascular plants, fungi, moss and lichen. Mule deer are common throughout the Grand Canyon National Park and are commonly seen on the rim. Bobcats and coyotes range from rim to river and a small population of mountain lions do exists in the park. The smaller mammals inhabit at the Grand Canyon National Park are ringtails, beavers, gophers, chipmunks, rabbits and bats. Reptiles and amphibians are also present including the unique Grand Canyon pink rattlesnake, turtles, frogs, toads and salamanders. Around the Grand Canyon National Park there are over three hundreds of species of birds make their home along with thousands of insects and arachnids.
