
The Mona Lisa is one of the most famous painting in the history of art that has been admired, copied, stolen, exploited, and parodied. Leonardo da Vinci began painting the Mona Lisa oil painting on poplar wood (77 x 53 cm) in 1502 and completed in four years.
The portrait of Mona Lisa also known as La Gioconda is the wife of Francesco del Giocondo. Dressed in the Florentine fashion and seated in a visionary mountainous landscape. Leonardo himself loved the portrait so much that he always carried it with him until eventually in France it was sold to Francis I of France.
It is owned by the French government and hangs in the Musée du Louvre in Paris. The painting is a half-length portrait depicts a woman whose gaze meets the viewer's with an expression often described as enigmatic.
